Best Time to Visit Maasai Mara 2026 | Evara Travel Escapes
When is the best time to visit the Maasai Mara? Our Nairobi team breaks it down month by month — migration dates, weather, costs, and crowds for 2026.
Best Time to Visit the Maasai Mara in 2026 — Month by Month Guide
The best time to visit the Maasai Mara is July to October, when the Great Migration brings over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebras to the Mara River. July and August offer the highest chance of witnessing a river crossing. The dry season (June to October) gives the best overall game viewing. December to March is a quieter, greener alternative with excellent big cat sightings and lower prices.
The Maasai Mara is one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth — but when you go matters more than almost any other decision you will make. Visit in the wrong month and you may encounter heavy rains, overgrown grassland, and fewer animals in the open. Visit at the right time and you will watch a wall of wildebeest pour into a crocodile-filled river from ten metres away.
This guide breaks down every month of the year so you can decide exactly when your safari fits your schedule, your budget, and the experience you are after. We have written it from Nairobi, where our team has been running Kenya safaris for years. No fluff, no filler — just the honest answer.
Understanding the Maasai Mara Seasons
The Mara has two core seasons that shape everything:
The dry season (June – October) — short grass, concentrated wildlife around water, the Great Migration, the best game drives.
The wet season (November – May) — lush green landscape, fewer crowds, lower prices, excellent birding and big cat sightings, though some roads become difficult after heavy rain.
There are also two short transition periods — November and March to May — which bring moderate conditions and genuinely good value for money.
Maasai Mara Month by Month — 2026 Guide
Use this as your quick reference, then read the detail below for whichever month applies to you.
January — Warm and dry. Big cats, elephants, resident herds. ✅ Great — quiet and affordable.
February — Hot and mostly dry. Cheetah, lion, leopard. ✅ Excellent — great value.
March — Rains begin mid-month. Good big cats before long rains. ⚠️ Good if travelling early.
April — Long rains. Difficult roads, dramatic green scenery. ❌ Avoid unless budget travel.
May — Long rains easing. Improving from late May, fewer crowds. ⚠️ Late May is viable.
June — Dry season begins. Migration entering Kenya. Predators active. ✅ Excellent — start of peak.
July — Peak season begins. River crossings starting. Big cats plentiful. 🌟 BEST — peak migration.
August — The single best safari month. Most river crossings. Maximum wildlife density. 🌟 BEST — peak migration.
September — Dry, still superb. Migration present, excellent predator action. ✅ Excellent — slightly quieter.
October — Transitional. Resident wildlife strong. Migration departing south. ✅ Very good — fewer crowds.
November — Short rains. Good game with green backdrop, fewer tourists. ⚠️ Good for budget safari.
December — Short rains ending. Big cats active. Resident herds. ⚠️ Good, but expensive over Christmas.
July and August — The Best Months for the Great Migration
These are the months that have made the Maasai Mara globally famous. Between late July and late August, enormous columns of wildebeest cross the Mara River in one of nature's most breathtaking and brutal spectacles. Crocodiles wait in the water. Lions patrol the banks. The dust, the noise, the sheer scale of it — nothing prepares you.
This is also the time when big cat sightings reach their highest density anywhere in Africa. The short dry grass means visibility is exceptional, and the concentration of prey keeps predators close to the river plains.
Book your July or August safari at least six months in advance. The best camps and guide slots sell out early. Contact us to check current availability
June — The Sweet Spot Before Peak Season
June offers peak-season game viewing at slightly lower prices than July and August. The wildebeest herds have crossed from Tanzania into Kenya by late June, and the grass is short enough for superb visibility. Crowds are noticeably lower in early June.
If your priority is the wildlife experience rather than witnessing a river crossing specifically, June is arguably the most cost-effective month in the Mara.
September and October — Excellent Game Viewing as Crowds Thin
By September the school-holiday crowds have largely left, but the wildlife remains exceptional. The wildebeest herds are still present in early September before beginning their return journey south. Lion and cheetah activity stays high throughout both months.
October is underrated. Prices drop, the Mara is quieter, and the resident wildlife — elephants, buffaloes, hippos, leopards — is as good as at any point in the year.
January and February — Best Value for Big Cat Sightings
The Mara in January and February is genuinely underestimated. The short rains have ended, the landscape is green but not overgrown, and the big cats are spectacularly active. Cheetah sightings in particular are excellent during these months — the open Mara Triangle gives them long sight-lines to hunt.
Prices are significantly lower than peak season and the camps are quieter. If you cannot travel in July or August, January and February are the best alternative.
February also coincides with the wildebeest calving season in the Serengeti. If you combine Kenya and Tanzania on one trip, the timing is exceptional for predator-prey action. See our Kenya and Tanzania safari packages
December — A Good Month, Except at Christmas
Early December is excellent — dry, warm, good game viewing, and still relatively affordable. From around 20 December to 3 January, the Mara sees a surge in visitors and prices spike sharply. If you are planning a Christmas or New Year safari, book at least nine months ahead and expect premium rates.
April and May — The Months to Avoid
April and May bring the long rains, and parts of the Mara can become extremely difficult to navigate. Some camps close entirely for maintenance. Game viewing is possible — the wildlife does not disappear — but muddy roads, reduced visibility, and limited camp availability make these months challenging.
If budget is the primary consideration, late May can work well. The rains ease toward the end of the month and prices are at their annual lowest.
When Is the Mara Least Crowded?
The quietest months with the best weather are January, February, and October. You will have the same guides, the same game, and often the same camps — but with dramatically fewer vehicles at sightings.
The busiest months are July, August, and the Christmas school holidays in late December. If you are travelling during peak season, staying in a private conservancy bordering the reserve — such as Naboisho, Olare Motorogi, or Mara North — gives you exclusive game drives with no vehicle limits.
Ask us about private conservancy options. Get in touch with our team — they cost more per night, but the exclusive access transforms the experience entirely.
How Far in Advance Should You Book a Maasai Mara Safari?
July and August: At least 6 months ahead, ideally 9–12 months for the best camps
June and September: 4–6 months ahead
October to May (excluding Christmas): 2–4 months ahead is usually sufficient
Christmas and New Year: 9–12 months minimum
Maasai Mara vs the Serengeti — Does the Month Change Things?
The Great Migration is a circular route. In July and August the herds are in the Kenyan Mara. From September to November they begin moving south back into Tanzania. By January to March the calving season takes place in Tanzania's southern Serengeti.
This means the best time to see the Migration in Kenya is specifically July to September. Outside those months, the Tanzania side of the ecosystem often offers the better Migration experience.
We run combined Kenya and Tanzania safaris that follow the migration throughout the year. See our Kenya and Tanzania packages
